Nicole Kidman hits out at Hollywood portrayals of women as weak, sex objects

NICOLE KIDMAN has spoken out about domestic violence.

The Oscar winner admitted Hollywood had contributed to the problem by often portraying women as weak sex objects.

But the 42-year-old star said she was not interested in those kinds of demeaning roles and added that the movie industry also had made efforts to contribute to finding ways to end the violence.

Kidman was testifying before a US congressional committee considering legislation to deal with violence against women overseas, through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organisations.

Asked by Republican representative Dana Rohrabacher whether the movie industry had "played a bad role", Kidman said "probably".

She added: "I can't be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my own career."
